Homeowners policies typically cap jewelry theft coverage around twenty five hundred dollars total. For most households that is well short of the actual value.
Jewelry is one of the clearest examples of a gap most homeowners do not know they have. The policy covers jewelry, so people assume they are protected. The limitation is in how much, and under what circumstances.
Homeowners policies typically cap jewelry theft coverage around twenty five hundred dollars. That is the total, not per item.
For a single engagement ring, an inherited piece, or a watch, that cap is often a small fraction of the value. A household with several meaningful pieces can be carrying a fraction of a percent of what they own.
Note the word theft. The cap applies specifically to theft, which is also the most likely way jewelry is lost.
The answer is a separate jewelry policy. Pieces are scheduled individually, each with a stated value, and coverage is written to that value rather than to a category cap.
Scheduled coverage is also typically broader in what it covers. A stone that falls out of a setting and is never found is a common scenario that scheduled coverage is built to handle and a homeowners policy generally is not.
Scheduling requires documentation, usually an appraisal. This is worth doing carefully rather than quickly.
Appraisals age. Precious metal and stone values move, and a valuation from a decade ago may not reflect what replacement would cost now. If your pieces are already scheduled but the appraisals are old, that is worth revisiting, because the stated value is what governs at claim time.
Take an inventory. Photograph each piece, note what you know about its origin and value, and locate any appraisals you already have. That inventory is most of the work, and it is useful regardless of what you decide to insure.
